10 simple changes you can make to feel happier every day

We are all told how important it is to look after our bodies: to eat well and exercise more, but less is said about how to look after your mental health. This is equally, if not more important than your physical health.

There are simple changes we can make every day to look after our mental well-being and feel happier:

1. Open your curtains

The first thing you should try do when you wake up in the morning (yes, even before checking your phone) is open the curtains. It may sound simple but you’d be surprised how much better it’ll make you feel to see the sunlight streaming through your window. It’ll immediately give your mood a boost and start the day off in a positive way.

2. Set a goal
Set yourself 1 goal every day. It could be as simple as getting out of the house that day or talking to someone you’ve never spoken to before. Recognise that not every goal needs to involve climbing Kilimanjaro or becoming CEO of your own company (not that these aren’t worthwhile goals). One positive change every day will soon mount up.

3. Take a moment
Take a few minutes out of your day to stop and appreciate what’s going on around you. It might be how good your coffee smells in the morning or the taste of that piece of cake you’ve treated yourself to. Those small moments may seem trivial but they help you appreciate things that have nothing to do with material wealth or success.

4. Remember the end goal
Acknowledge that everything is impermanent. That blue mood will pass and as soon as you can acknowledge that, then you’ll see an end in sight. But also accept that there will be days when you feel unhappy and that this is perfectly normal. Don’t put pressure on yourself to feel happy all the time (although these simple changes might help!)

5. Don’t doubt yourself
Don’t over-think things. It only leads to self-doubt and anxiety. Make a decision and stick with it. Instead of worrying about all the things that could go wrong, reflect on all the positive that could come of it.

6. Accept the inevitable
Accept that not everything will go the way you want it to but also recognise that you can control yourself and your behaviour.

7. Focus on you
Stop worrying about what people think of you or the choices you make. Truth be told people don’t think about you all that much. Usually they’re too busy thinking about themselves. This frees you up to do the things that make you the happiest without fear of others judging you.

8. Treasure good people
Leading on from number 7, surround yourself with good people; people who inspire you and make you feel good about yourself. Don’t let other people drain you with their insecurities, I’m sure you have enough of your own to contend with. Tell yourself each day that you’re not inferior to anyone.

9.  Remember how special you are
Instead of comparing yourself to others, each day find one thing that makes you unique and special. When you’re having a low day remember this. Sometimes it’s easier to see the negative in ourselves rather than the positive. Champion yourself, there’s nothing wrong with it.

10. Compliment others
Lastly, pay one person a compliment or give them a word of encouragement each day. This could completely change a persons day and it’ll make you feel good in the process.
